I will briefly survey the recent theoretical and experimental progress in designing new strongly correlated electron systems in two-dimensional Van der Waals materials. These have proved to be a fertile ground for a plethora of unusual phenomena, including exotic superconductivity and topological phases of matter. Focusing on magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene as an example, I will highlight some of the puzzles and the recent breakthroughs in understanding this system.
