Peierls and a Pair-density wave

A pair-density wave (PDW) is an exotic superconducting state where the order parameter spontaneously breaks translation symmetry and acquires a periodic spatial modulation. In this poster, I will present a novel mechanism which leads to a PDW in a simple two-dimensional extended Hubbard model. The PDW arises from a mixed-symmetry superconducting state with coexisting s-, d-, and p-wave components; an unusual combination that produces an edge-localized modulation of the pairing amplitude. I will introduce this mixed- symmetry parent state, the structure of the PDW, and discuss the mechanism for its formation, which is analogous to the Peierls transition in a one-dimensional lattice.
